Colonel Count Klaus Schenck von Stauffenberg was selected as the man most likely to succeed in killing Hitler.

With the success of the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 and the costly defeat of the German army at Stalingrad on the Eastern Front, many high ranking German officers believed that the destruction of Nazi Germany was now only a matter of time. To prevent this they decided to eliminate Hitler and open negotiations with the Allies for honorable peace terms.

Plot to Assassinate Adolf Hitler

It would not be an easy task. Hitler was well aware that assassination attempts were being plotted against him and he took steps to make his movements as unpredictable as possible. He frequently changed his plans at the last minute, arriving early or late or not at all. No one knew until the last moment if he would travel by plane or car or train. No one could get close to him with a weapon. Security was very tight in the Chancellery in Berlin or at Hitler’s mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden in Bavaria or most recently the Wolf’s Lair in East Prussia.

Colonel von Stauffenberg

Despite all these factors, a group of German officers decided to make the attempt. The plan was simple. Due to his position as chief of staff and his injuries, von Stauffenberg was above suspicion and met with Hitler regularly. He had lost two fingers on his left hand, his right forearm and hand and his right eye when attacked by an Allied plane in North Africa a year before. When von Stauffenberg arrived at the Wolf’s Lair he would prime the bomb, enter the building and due to his injuries, which included impaired hearing, be positioned close to Hitler. He would place the bomb and then be called to the phone by his adjutant Lieutenant Werner von Haeften. Safely out of the room the bomb would explode, hopefully killing everyone inside. Von Stauffenberg would then fly back to Berlin where General Erich Fellgiebel would inform army headquarters that Hitler was dead. Generals Friedrich Olbricht and Erich Fromm would then take over the government and Field Marshal Erwin von Witzelben would take control of the army. The German resistance would then be contacted to take over civilian posts. In France General Carl-Heinrich von Stulpnagel, German military commander in Paris, would take control, contact the Allies and negotiate an armistice.

Von Stauffenberg had first become involved in the plot after he was released from the hospital and assigned to the staff of General Olbricht, Head of Supply for the Reserve Army. Colonel Henning von Tresckow, an officer who had been building a conspiracy against Hitler since 1941 and knew von Stauffenberg as sympathetic to the cause, arranged the appointment. A number of high ranking German officer were in on the plot and had in fact already failed in four attempts to get close enough to kill Hitler.

Operation Valkyrie

The conspirators adopted the code name Operation Valkyrie The plot took a step forward when von Stauffenberg was promoted to Colonel and made chief of staff to General Olbricht but a step back when Tresckow left Berlin for the Russian Front. It was now up to von Stauffenberg and Olbricht to keep the conspiracy on track.

As it was part of von Stauffenberg’s job to report directly to Hitler, he was the obvious man to carry the bomb the plotters decided to use. He first met Der Fuehrer on June 7, the day after D-Day when it became obvious to the plotters that the end of the Third Reich was just a matter of time. Time was not on their side and speed was of the greatest importance. Twice von Stauffenberg met with Hitler but as the conspirators wanted to kill other high ranking Nazis such as Field Marshal Hermann Goring or possibly Reichsmarshal Heinrich Himmler at the same time, he did not make the attempt. I find the new movie about this to be disingenuous. Von Stauffenberg and the German plotters were not about killing Hitler because he was evil. He was evil, but if they thought so, where were they when Germany was killing its own people and attacking its peaceful neighbors? As the historical comment above says, Operation Valkyrie was about saving Germany from complete destruction, because Hitler was off his rocker and wouldn't listen to his military advisors.

The assassination plot of 1944 portrays that not all officers chose to follow Hitler's orders. One has to keep in mind that Von Stauffenberg and the other conspirators were all decorated officers with devotion to their country where honor and duty is the hallmark shared by every professional soldier and disobedience was tantamount to sedition. The million dollar question we should ask ourselves is , What if Staffenberg's plan had succeeded ? Would our future turned out the same way ?

I believe that the movie was great. Many of the German resistance were motivated by Hitlers evil actions but as you said most believed that Hitler would bring about the destruction of Germany. And many of the resistance did not have enough power to stop Germany's attack on their neighbors and if they tried they would have given away their posisition in the resistance. I thought that the movie illistrated this concept nicely.

stauffenberg was roman catholic and had a philosphy of life that made him loathe the Nazis and Hitler for the war and the killing you cant say that they didnt do it because he was evil because that was a main reason stauffenberg even tried in the first place

I have only seen the movie recently and enjoyed every minute of it. Mr Cruise's portrayal of Colonel von Stauffenberg as well as the other actors in the film were magnificent . History in the making brought to us who did not experience the horrors of war. I believe that these honourable men would have saved thousands of lives and prevented uneccesary bloodshed providing that thier plot would have succedded but again nothing stand in destiny's way and humanity had to suffer nine more months of gruelling hardship and agony brought by the destruction of war. It is also about time that we see more of the other page of war as told from the german side of the story. I believe That the German Army , Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe were superior to any other army navy or airforce in the world at that time. Losing the war was another story.

I found Stuaffenburg a real hero, but what about the other conspirators? I think Tresckow attempted more assassinations than Stuaffenburg ever did. But nevertheless, they should all be awarded bravery awards.

to the one below: The reason they did nothing was because they did not have enough power. Sure they had people on theyre side but they did not have enough power to stop all of that. The only way they could gain power was to kill Hitler and assume power. That is why your statement is somewhat incorrect.

I sincerely hope that Adolph Hitler is in eternal prison and a million Wizard Of Oz Monkeys are forever chewing on his little freaky toothbrush mustache.

The crimes against humanity by Germany should never be forgotten and never happen again.

History has shown us, time and time again that we as humans and supposed intelligent beings, we don't seem to learn much from our pasts. Or rather do many seldom seem to because we keep repeating the history's past injustices, evils and wars all in the name of anything we deem "popular" and generally acceptable by the majority of that time. Those are just excuses to justify the "means". The Hitlers of our world may always exist because of those reasons and because we keep allowing them to exist thereby allowing them to slowly gain power, deceive and manipulate us all. Open your eyes and clearly see all of the current "Hitlers" around us! Just keep in mind a few very important things: they are more clever and less obvious now (they are in disguise) and more powerful than ever before. Things are NOT always as they seem...

I believe that Nostrodamus was indeed the 2nd Anti-christ. This man was full of hate and according to Nostrodamus' he killed hiself with the intent of returning us once again. God forbid the Nostrodamus prophesis are indeed true.
